The need for local legal assistance has never been greater. Federal and local governments, foundations, and other agencies have all slashed or outright eliminated funding for civil legal services for the poor. These individuals-our neighbors-need our help now more than ever.
No single legal services agency can meet the needs of all who qualify for aid. THE CAMPAIGN for Legal Services provides grants that ensure balanced funding to proven local legal aid organizations.
Programs
The Katharine and George Alexander Community Law Center
For more than thirty years, the Katharine & George Alexander Community Law Center has provided pro bono advice and representation in several areas, including consumer law, immigration, workers’ rights, and Unhoused Advocacy. Poverty-stricken minorities and immigrants from diverse countries make up the vast majority of clients of the Community Law Center, which is the civil clinical component of the Santa Clara University School of Law.
The Asian Law Alliance
The Asian Law Alliance provides free legal services, educates residents about key rights, and engages in advocacy to build power with and for underserved community members.
Bay Area Legal Aid
BayLegal works to address the causes and consequences of poverty through high quality legal assistance and advocacy.
Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto
CLSEPA’s goal is to support individuals and communities in effecting significant, positive changes by delivering transformative legal services. Their direct services are coupled with other legal strategies, including community education, technical assistance, policy advocacy, and impact litigation.
Law Foundation of Silicon Valley
The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley uses legal advocacy to combat injustices like poverty, inequity, and child abuse. They provide free legal services on housing, health, and children’s rights issues and systems change work to advance equity and justice for low-income individuals and communities of color in Silicon Valley.
Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County
The Society believes that a community is stronger when everyone has a home, economic security, and essential public services. They represent clients navigating complex legal systems, empower them to advocate for themselves, and fix broken systems through policy change. Their legal representation helps people obtain stable housing, healthcare, education, economic security, immigration status, protection from abuse, and family stability.
Pro Bono Project Silicon Valley
The Project links volunteer attorneys with low-income Santa Clara County community members who have cases in Santa Clara County involving domestic violence and reentry civil legal matters. Services can include advice, referral to other resources, preparation of documents, help with filing, coaching on self-representation, negotiation and settlement, and limited scope representation.
Senior Adults Legal Assistance (SALA)
SALA is a non-profit elder law office whose mission is to support older persons in their efforts to live safely, independently, non-institutionalized, and with dignity. They provide free legal services and community education to Santa Clara County residents who are age 60 or older, providing a range of legal services from simple advice/referrals to comprehensive legal representation. SALA’s caseload consists of legal matters that private attorneys typically do not handle and that have a great impact on the elders most in need in our community.
